Last week I found out that one of my coworkers and I share a birthday. What else could I do?
Bonny butter cake with chocolate butter frosting.
Okay, I could have restrained myself. But with an exceptional pretext like that, I had to bake. Fortunately my coworkers were eager to help me with the results.
...now I'm thinking maybe I should eat lightly the next few days.
Blue cake??? And soooo many layers? I've never seen anything like it. What a birthday celebration! Any treat that involves chocolate...can't help but be the best!
Wow! I'm impressed. On about 5 occasions, I have successfully made a 2-layer cake. Sometimes a sheet cake is too much of a challenge for me. But 5???? WOW!
I baked 3 layers (because when I originally bought layer pans, they were out of 9", so I had to get 3 8" layer pans instead, and hence have always done layers in multiples of 3). Then I cut off the rounded tops of the layers to make them flatter (that's the key to getting layers even). Leftover cake bits are eaten with the frosting scrapings from the bowl, to assure quality control. Then I sliced each layer in 2 (not very evenly- I'm out of practice). And then built the cake, frosting as I went. The unevenly cut layers aren't a problem so long as you replace each layer in the same orientation to its mate, so the cake as a whole remains level.
It's actually kind of cool, and while I went with all-frosting, there are other options to fill the layers- I've done chocolate cake with whipped cream filling (pro-tip- make homemade whipped cream- the spray can stuff has too much air and won't support the layers without things sliding all over the place). Chocolate whipped cream with a yellow cake is pretty tasty too. Alternatively jam can be used for a sort of jelly roll effect. Now. Don't ask me about jelly rolls. Rolled cakes I've never been able to do without making a huge mess!
I'm seeing blue and brown. Please don't tell me it's really yellow...
ReplyDeleteIt really was yellow, but it's not you, it's the way the cellphone camera interpreted the office lighting. Everyone else sees blue too.

ReplyDeleteYellow cake- the cellphone camera + office lighting makes the color look off. And more layers means more frosting!
DeleteThe dress cake! (Okay, clearly I'm being original here, but still!) Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! That cake looks delicious!!! Belated happy birthday to you AND your co-worker.
